"There is a type of portrait painting that works quite perfectly and primarily produces a rather precise representation of the outer appearance of a person. It requires a special type of talent and especially the ability to see geometric forms and translate them into the painting. I do not have this type of talent, but I do have a passionate interest in the person himself.
Due to this fact, I depend on describing my emotional impressions of the respective person by using suitable colours to send out sublimal signals. This is also the case, because my strong excitement during the painting process itself absolutely prevents me from appraising situations and determining my expressions in a controlled way. At the same time, I reject it to simply describe a painting as representing my personal view, if it actually does not represent the person it portrays. A portrait is something that everyone should be able to understand."
